Was Groucho Right?

Grouch Marx was once attributed with saying, "He would never be a member of a club that would have him as a member".
This comment, can be perceived as funny, sad, or suggesting a need for therapy.
But lets examine it another way. If you have every been a member of a group, you know it can be fun, boring, challenging, exciting and annoying. Sometimes you are part of a group and didn't even know it. Sometimes you are part of a group and wish you really could quit, but don't know how.

Even when you think of quitting, you know that
not being part of something is generally hard to give up. People don't like quitters and people don't like people who don't want to be like them.
You also know that being part of a group makes you one of them, whatever they are. Most often, as one of them, if you try to inject something different, or new, or suggest change, watch out.
Watch out, because the group is for being the same, doing the same and acting the same. Change is not good, different is not good. Being new, or better or seeking something better can also be bad.. that is often viewed as change. Remember, change is bad.
So maybe Groucho was right, to be different, really good at something, or to aspire to be more than everybody else, is not often going to happen in a group. At least not the groups that Groucho knew about.
